Whakapapa

The following whakapapa was presented by Sir Tamati Reedy at E Tu Ngati Porou, 25 March 2017.

It traces Ngati Porou whakapapa from Maui down to Toi, down to Paikea and then down to Porourangi. This is the ancestor that Ngati Porou take their name from. The whakapapa then continues from Porourangi to Poroumata via the the senior line of Hau. Poroumata married Whaene also a descendant of Porourangi. The three daughters of Poroumata and Whaene are: Materoa; Tāwhipare and Te Ataakura. They were considered by Sir Apirana Ngata, to be ‘among the most outstanding members of the Porourangi line who bred its greatest chiefs and most celebrated warriors' (ref: Porourangi School of Maori Culture, rauru-nui-a-toi course).
